EISA-2 consists of the following interrelated layers:
- There is a quick Web access to specific types of technical literature, including articles published in journals and presented at conferences, technical reports, patents, standards, theses, books, and maps. These sources are both free of charge and for fee. Quick access offers little or no textual explanation or tutorials; it is designed for frequent users who need information fast and now. Quick Web access contains sources that are available over the Internet.
- Self-paced tutorials for each of the individual chapters (on articles, on patents, and so forth) offer mini tutorials along with examples, visuals, questions, script templates, and excerpts from controlled vocabularies. This version includes both printed and Web sources.
- ATlas of Engineering Information Sources, ATEIS.
- Transition between the quick Web access and the full version is made transparent, allowing the user to seamlessly switch from the tutorial version to the quick Web access.
- Early results were reported in technical reports (1998, 2001) to the Engineering Information Foundation, and in:
- Ercegovac, Zorana. (1999) "LEArning Portfolio for Accessing Engineering Information for Engineers." In: Larry Woods, ed. Knowledge: Creation, Organization and Use. Proceedings of the 62nd ASIS Annual Meeting, volume 38, pages 450-461. Washington, D. C. October 31-November 4, 1999. Medford, New Jersey: Information Today, Inc., published for the American Society for Information Science (now ASIST).
- Acknowledgments:
- This work was supported by the Engineering Information Foundation under grant EiF99.8.
- Special thanks go to Prof. David Rennels of the Computer Science Department at UCLA for his constructive comments, especially during the normative stage of EISA2 program. Technical expertise and constructive critique were provided by Vuk Ercegovac of Quiq. Many thanks to Una and Milos who contributed in significant ways to different phases of this entire effort. The Project also benefited by my library and engineering graduated students (1994, 1995, 1996 and in 1998) who were enrolled in my classes at UCLA, especially in Bibliography of Science and Engineering (LIS 221).
